Rick’s Bloody Mary

While to me, I only know this drink as my father-in-law’s, but the original creater of this recipe was his friend Eddy. The very first time I tried it is quite the story. I was at our family lake house and was actually 8 ½ months pregnant with my second child.  My husband’s grandmother, who we called G.G., came up to me and told me to try a sip of a drink. I had asked her what it was and she just laughingly said take a sip! So, I took a “sip” of this mystery drink and absolutely LOVED it!  When I asked her what it was she told me it was Rick’s Bloody Mary and I looked at her and said “Grandma, I am pregnant!” As a mother of six children, her response was “Oh don’t worry you are pretty much fully cooked!” She was so funny because she kept trying to give me more “sips.” Finally, I caved in and had one more “sip”. Little did I know that the next week I would give birth to my second daughter! I guess she was right! Now, by no means am I saying you should be drinking mystery drinks during your pregnancy, but I couldn’t resist sharing this fond memory of great grandma!

My father-in-law makes these all the time! Every time we would walk into the lake house and open the fridge, I was thrilled to find a Clamato bottle filled with this delicious cocktail ready to serve. It is salty, tomatoey, spicy, and packed with a ton of flavor.  The secret ingredient to THIS Bloody Mary is the Clamato tomato juice or clam juice/tomato juice. It is what gives the saltiness and major flavor to this Bloody Mary.  He uses three tablespoons of horseradish, however, I like mine with lots of horseradish so I use 5 to 6 tablespoons. In fact, whenever I decide to order a Bloody Mary at a restaurant, I ask them to add some horseradish and Worcestershire (if they have it) to spice things up and add more flavor!

Rick’s Bloody Mary

5 to 6 Tablespoons jarred, raw horseradish (not the creamy kind)

1 (5.8 oz.) small can spicy V-8

 Olives (optional)
